Modelism or Trinity
The following passage is short and describes a God in three persons as the Athanasian Creed.
However, it doesn't go into great detail of how the one God is in three persons. This leaves
room for it to be modelistic. It is well documented that 2nd Nephi was written last of all the
books in the Book of Mormon. This and 1st Nephi replaced the texts that were lost by Oliver
Cowdery his scribe. Whether or not Joseph Smith Jr. was teaching the Trinity or Modelism at
this time is not clear by the passage. Either way, he wasn't teaching the Tri-Theistic Doctrine
of the Church that he taught later in the Doctrine and Covenants.
Nephi 31:21
And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given
under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine
of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is
one God, without end. Amen.
