Charged to Investigate for the Truth

Deuteronomy 18:20-22

" But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the names of other gods, that prophet shall die. And if you say in your heart, "How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?"--- "when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if that thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously ; you shall not be afraid of him. -- NKJV

The LORD has given us guidance in these matters of who is and isn't a Prophet through the first of His Prophets Moses. There are two issues of assessment here that we must look at. The Prophecy in a name of another god and the predictive prophecy that doesn't come true. We must investigate to find out if either of these issues of assessment are problematic for the first LDS Prophet. We must look at the times in the Prophet's shortened life where he gave a message as a Prophet to the people who followed him and examine whether or not they are consistent with prior Divine revelation, if it was in the Name of the LORD, and all of his predictive prophecies came true.

In Criminal Law, a person is guilty of an offence only when he has satisfied the elements of the offence. The elements of the offence of "being a false Prophet are different than a lot of our Laws in the United States. Most Criminal elements include both an Act or Ommission of duty slong with a prescribed Culpability to do such Acts or Ommissions. The LORD has defined this offence above without a Culpability assigned. This means that the false Prophet is guilty whether he or she knew or intended to give false Prophecy. Some false Prophets in the form of sooth sayers, clarvoyants and astrologers may believe that what they are doing is from God. The Bible says these are from a "higher power" but, not from the LORD and only true God of the Universe. They are still false Prophets even though their intentions may be pure. This is important to keep in mind when testing the claim of a Prophet. The person that is claiming to give Prophecy may be a deceiver, but may also be deceived themselves.

Jurisprudence demands that if Joseph Smith Jr. was a true Prophet of God, all of his successors should be judged as Prophets in the same manner. If Joseph Smith Jr. proves to be a false Prophet, none of his successors need examination. For, the Authority of Joseph Smith Jr. which was passed on through Brigham Young on to the present day Prophet is a fruit of the poisonous tree. If the claim of restoration is debunked, the LDS Church's authenticity as the original and restored church of Jesus Christ is void. For restoration to be necessary, the original church must have been apostate and lost. Let's examine the Scripture to see what God says about His Kingdom, His word, and His church.
